Visiting a Buddhist Temple

Introduction:

All throughout Cambodia, you will find Buddhist and Hindu temples. I was surprised to see so many Buddhist and Hindu temples, which are also called pagodas. It reminded me of seeing churches in small towns throughout the United States. Similar to the Christian tradition of going to church on Sundays, Buddhist and Hindu people in Cambodia visit the community pagoda to worship. One day, I visited a pagoda on my own and learned about this spiritual tradition.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about Buddhist culture after visiting a pagoda in Siem Reap, Cambodia. I was having a hard day and I went for a walk. I passed a beautiful, ornate building. There was gold covering the roof and a decorated gate. It looked inviting, so I decided to go inside. Inside the gate, there was a beautiful garden and a large temple. In the garden, there was a bush carved into the shape of an elephant. There was also a large boat surrounded by flowers. Monks, who were dressed in orange clothes, were washing up behind the temple. There were a few people going inside the temple. I decided to join them and learn about Buddhist traditions.

The philosophy behind Buddhism stems from the original teachings of Buddha, beginning around the 5th century BC. The story of Buddha is very interesting. He was a rich, sheltered prince.
