Amman is a real life story book with whimsical roads and hidden gems. While carrying milennia of history as one of the world's oldest inhabited cities, it also blooms with contemporary restaurants, cafes and art.
Terrain
Amman's terrain is bit different from our city. While NYC was organized using a grid-like system with perpendicular lines that section the city, Amman was built on several hills, called jabals, giving way to curvy, zig-zag paths and slopes that take you from neighborhood to neighborhood. In NYC, the land is pretty much flat so everything is built at a consistent ground level whereas in Amman, the cityscape has a lot more "texture" so you'll see that the bases of some homes or buildings sit at a higher altitude than others. As you walk, you'll also notice many long, and sometimes steep, staircases that almost feel like secret portals, and they're meant to bring you into deeper crevices of the city. On a typical weekday, I would taking one of these long staircases to a cafe in downtown Amman and then take another one up to the neighborhood where I would either be working at school or studying at the public library.
