Hello, Ms. Whitcomb’s class!

My name is Jamie Hollander, and I’m going to be sharing my journey to Norway with you all over the next few months.

I’m originally from Medfield, Massachusetts, but I went to college at Bates right down the road! Growing up, I had no idea what I wanted to study or what kind of job I wanted to have in the future. I had a lot of interests, from learning and reading, to being outdoors, skiing and hanging out with my friends, but I didn’t have any direction.

Going into my first semester at Bates, I decided to sign up for a class called “Field Geology of Maine.” We learned the basics of geology (the study of rocks and the Earth), then went on field trips all around Maine to connect what we learned in class to what we can see right in our backyard. This was a life changing experience for me. This course led me to become an Earth and Climate Sciences (EACS) major at Bates, and it ignited my passion for the Earth sciences, field work and research.

As an EACS major, I took all sorts of cool classes. I learned about sediments, minerals, glaciers, greenhouse gases and everything in between.
