There is always a porch where Hana and her family can dry their clothes in the sun.
Lis, Penny and Hana all said that their chores include: hanging their clothes out to dry, sweeping the floors and cleaning their desks when they are messy. When asked if they have ever had to do chores as a punishment, they all said No!
Lis: "I don't know!"
Penny: "My mom is a realtor and my dad works with trains."
Hana: "My mom started a business that preserves the cultural practices of Indigenous Amis people such as weaving and using plants to dye yarn. Many students visit her business to learn about our culture."
Penny: "We have school from 7:20 a.m. to 6:00 p.m."
The students end classes around 4 p.m., but the other students stay an additional two hours to complete their homework before heading home. After-school classes are very common throughout Taiwan, but since they are not offered in the village of Xikou, students spend extra time at school doing homework.
Hana: "My mom drives me to school."
Penny: "I walk to school."
Lis: "I walk to school, too."
When students are at school, they eat food that is provided such as rice or noodles with a meat sauce and a side of vegetables such as broccoli, leafy greens or mushrooms. A common food is also scrambled eggs mixed with tomatoes.
