Who Am I?

Location:
Medellín, Colombia
Journal Entry:

Hola desde Medellín! Hello from Medellín! My name is Natalie Skowlund and I am 23 years old. Right now, I am living in Medellín, Colombia teaching English at a local university. I am really excited to share my journey living in Medellín with you, but first, I want to tell you a little bit about myself.

I recently graduated from Davidson College in North Carolina, a small liberal arts college. In college, I studied political science and Hispanic studies. In my senior year of college, I decided to apply for a Fulbright scholarship to teach English in another country. I chose to apply to teach in Colombia because I had already spent a semester studying abroad in Cochabamba, Bolivia, another city in South America, and fell in love with the diverse cultures of Latin America. I was excited to apply to teach in Colombia specifically because other South Americans had told me that the Colombian people were incredibly kind and welcoming. I am also interested in politics. Colombia is currently undergoing a big political transition from a recent history of violence toward peace, and I wanted to learn more about what that means for ordinary Colombian people.

Before I went to college, I lived at home with my family, just like most of you probably do. I grew up near Portland, Oregon, in the suburban town of Lake Oswego.
