Wildlife sanctuaries like Bonorong can take care of the babies while they’re small and then release them into the wild once they’re healthy and grown up. This is one way Tasmanians take care of their wildlife.
Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary takes care of all kinds of animals that have been injured. The sanctuary has veterinarians that can care for different kinds of animals. These professionals can help cockatoos with broken wings, echidnas with injured feet or baby wallabies who don’t have a mom to care for them. Once the animals are healthy again, the workers release these creatures back into the wild. If the animals can’t go back to the wild, the sanctuary becomes their home, and they live a happy life with some human friends to care for them. I visited the sanctuary and got to meet some of the rescued animals. They make big habitats for the animals, kind of like a zoo. It is sad that these creatures don't get to go back to the wild, but all of the animals at Bonorong seemed quite happy to me!
