Small Ships and Environmental Sustainability

What parts of this environment help people to live here?:

As eco-tourism grows in the Caribbean, islands like Dominica are getting more attention. Eco-tourism is tourism in natural environments, often with a conservation focus. More attention means more visitors, and a large number of visitors can lead to more stress on the natural environment. However, if properly managed, visitors can also provide job opportunities for local guides, dock workers, and people in the hospitality industry.

On a unique island like Dominica, the natural beauty and mystery of the island supports an entire eco-tourism industry. When small numbers of Wind Surf guests can visit Dominica and experience its natural beauty, they support the local economy. Our goal is to make sure our guests leave behind a minimal environmental footprint.

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

Beautiful places can easily be overrun by visitors. Without a plan for sustainable development, an island like Dominica can lose the rainforests and wildlife that make it so unique. It is very important for cruise ships to plan carefully when they visit an island like Dominica. Without a purposeful effort to reduce their environmental footprints, visiting cruise ships can harm or destroy the environments of the places they aim to explore. As Wind Surf returns to Dominica year after year, it's important that we plan and work to make sure that the cumulative impact of the ship on this island (and others like it) is a positive one.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

Wind Surf is small for a cruise ship, but it is the world's largest sailing ship.
