My host mom, whom I call my aamaa, cooks the most flavorful meals. I typically eat daal bhaat for lunch and dinner everyday. Daal means lentils and bhaat means rice, so the food is literally rice and lentils. Though it sounds simple, so much more goes into preparing this food.
Momos, panipuri and daal bhaat!
Nepal is known for its momos, which are steamed dumplings stuffed with chicken or buffalo meat. I’ve eaten momos at my school and at different family functions, but my favorite have been the momos I ate with my friends on the Phulchowki trail, a hike up the tallest hill in Kathmandu valley. We bought them in the town before the trail, and they came with different flavorful sauces. My favorite was the sesame-flavored sauce, but I ended up mixing all the sauces with my momos anyway.
Near my home in Kathmandu, I also tried panipuri, a South Asian snack. Panipuri is a round chip stuffed with different vegetables and spices. This specific food stand adds dried noodles, mashed potatoes, peanuts, and onions. After stuffing the chip, they give you a bottle of flavored water that you pour inside the chip and eat in one bite.
