Public transport in the Wellington Region is well-developed compared to that in other parts of New Zealand. You can get around to various places by bus or travel to the South Island by ferry. There are many different options, and you can chose which one you prefer!
People in New Zealand get around on buses, ferries, trains and funicular (the Wellington Cable Car). All types of transportation in this region are regulated by a company called "Metlink." Buses and trains travel within the North Island, and the ferries travel from Wellington Terminal to the South Island. The cable car travels between Lambton Quay, the main shopping street, and Kelburn, a suburb in the hills overlooking the central city, rising 120 m (394 ft) over a length of 612 m (2,008 ft).
I traveled on both the bus and funicular before the lockdown in the country. The bus was very easy and cost about $1.50 NZ to use and navigate around the city. The funicular travels down a tunnel with colorful lights and had about four stops to the main street. It is a great experience and fun short ride for any visitor or local resident.
