My mom is a newspaper seller, and my dad is a taxi driver. My dad also helps my mom by driving her to work.
In the COAR, the first period starts at 7:30am, and classes do not end until 5:30pm. Last year, classes went as late as 6:30pm. Since we live at the COAR, we are here all day!
Before living at the COAR, I would go to school by kombi or bus. (Kombis are like vans or mini buses.) It used to be common for students to start going to school by themselves, or with friends, around twelve years of age. However, it doesn’t seem to be common now due to an increase in crime and traffic accidents.
In public schools, the day ends earlier so that students can eat lunch at home. If students want a snack at the school before lunch, they can get food at a food kiosk or a small business.
Lunches at home include typical dishes such as soups or stews. My favorite foods are parrillada (grilled meat or barbeque dish), pastel de tallarín (a noodle cake), arroz chaufa (Chinese-inspired fried rice), and rocoto relleno (Peruvian stuffed peppers). Of course, I like ice cream for dessert!
