There are many interesting animals in India. I am currently living in India to study some of these animals. I thought I would tell you all more about the animals that I study: honey bees! There are three types of honey bees in Bangalore: the giant honey bee, the dwarf honey bee and the eastern hive bee.
The three types of honey bees I study look very different from each other. The giant honey bee is huge. It has a very long body and is mostly golden brown in color. The eastern hive bee looks a lot like the honey bees we have in the United States. It has gold and black stripes. I think the dwarf bee is the prettiest bee. It is very small with red, black and white stripes on its body.
All honey bees have six legs and two pairs of wings. These legs and wings are all attached to the middle part of a bee’s body, which is called the thorax. Maybe you have heard that bees can sting you. The stinger is located on the last part of the bee’s body, called the abdomen. The front part of a bee’s body is the head of course!
The first time I saw these bees I was so excited! I had been learning about them for a long time. It was so cool to see them in person. I was very shocked to see how large the giant honey bee was. Even though the word "giant" is in its name, I didn’t expect it to be so big.
