Starting the Day - 6:00 AM
My days usually begin around 6AM, giving me plenty of time to get ready before catching the train at 7:00. The station is about a ten minute walk from my apartment, or 5 minutes by bike. I learned the hard way (by falling..!) that biking in the ice and snow can be similarly difficult to driving in it. Since the island has been so iced-over, I have been walking during the winter months.
On the train, I usually prepare lessons, study German with a grammar practice book or sometimes take a small nap. Several other teachers take the train as well, along with my students.
Working in a German School - 7:45-?
Each day I have a slightly different schedule. Sometimes I am at school during the first block, at 7:45, and other days I do not start until around 11:30. I see each class once a week for about 50 minutes. Every time we meet, I have different activities and lessons that I plan over topics that vary from U.S. holidays, such as Thanksgiving, to media literacy. Sometimes I also sit and observe classes or help as needed referencing different vocabulary, grammar and cultural subjects within the classroom.
Just like how each day has a different start time, they also vary greatly in when they end.
