Getting Around Moscow!

This art reminds them of those who came before, which is an important aspect of Russian identity.

How do people get around?:

Most people ride the Metro, underground and above ground trains like the subway system in New York City. The Metro is the fastest and most efficient way to navigate the city. People also take buses if they aren't traveling far or between Metro stops. There is a company called Yandex which is comparable to Amazon and Google rolled up into one company. They have an app you can download that outlines the routes of each train and bus, as well as an up-to-date schedule of where each one is and when it will arrive. It was very helpful and handy for me. However, most Russians have the Metro and bus schedules memorized because they are such an important part of their lives.

The Metro/bus system closes around 1:00 or 2:00 a.m. depending on where you are in the city. After that, you have to get a taxi or walk! Taxis are very inexpensive for the most part, far cheaper than in the United States. A lot of people walk to the Metro from their apartments. Metro stations are located in almost every neighborhood. My university was uncommonly far from a Metro stop. We had to walk a mile and a half to get to the Metro whenever we wanted to travel around the city. It was definitely a challenge in 15-degree weather, but it gave me such an appreciation for having my own car!

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

I was nervous about using the Metro at first, but all of the stops are announced in Russian and English, and most people are nice enough when you ask them where you should get off.
