Traditional Irish Music

Introduction:

While abroad, I decided to take a class about traditional music in Ireland. I am able to learn more about this tradition and its history, as well as learn some of the dances that accompany the tunes.

What tradition did I learn about?:

I learned about traditonal Irish music through the context of what is known as a "Session". A session is an informal gathering of musicians who play tunes on instruments that can include fiddles, bagpipes, harps, whistles, flutes, gutiars, banjos, pianos and more. There are several types of tunes including reels, jigs and hornpipes. All have unique tempos and some even include special dances.

Why does the community have this tradition?:

Sessions are a way for musicians to meet one another and socialize while doing something they love: playing music! It also provides people nearby with a great source of entertainment. In the early 20th century, many Irish people emigrated, meaning they moved from Ireland to different parts of the world. A number of these emigrants played traditional Irish music in sessions as a way to remain connected with their native culture as well as meet other Irish people. Today, the idea of an Irish session has become incredibly globalized, meaning many people from all over the world take part in this tradition.
