Learning German

Introduction:

There are many people like me who live in Germany but come from different countries. We come to Germany for work, school or safety, but not all of us can read or speak German right away. This makes it difficult to understand street signs, food menus, drivers’ license tests and grocery store items. Plus, it is very hard to go to school, get a job and make friends without speaking German. In this note, I am going to tell you my experiences with language use in Dresden.

What community need did I learn about?:

When I first came to Germany, it was challenging for me to communicate with people because it was hard for me to speak German. Often I would feel nervous when talking with people and it was scary for me to go to class. In order to be successful in Germany, people need to be able to speak, read and write German. That is when I learned about the helpful centers that teach language.

Why does the community have this need?:

The community has this need because there are many people who live in Germany who may not be able to speak German well. These people include college students, workers, schoolchildren and refugees from all over the world.

Is this need being met? How?:

In order to help people learn German, community members have set up free learning centers throughout Dresden.
