Every morning when I wake up I like to look out my window. I live on the fifth floor, so I can see very far over the city. Below me I see a road with cars, buses and lots of people walking on the sidewalk. In the distance I see many more tall buildings of all different colors and styles. Some of the buildings are tall and flat with lots of windows. Some have tall spires that pierce the sky. Some are made completely of glass and glow in the sunlight. What makes the buildings so different? Why don’t all buildings look the same? When we ask these questions we are thinking about the purpose and style of the buildings. This is thinking about architecture. Some buildings look very plain and simple. Other buildings are covered in brightly colored paint or beautiful designs. In this journal we will learn about the different types of architecture in the city of Vienna.

One of the most famous buildings in Vienna is called St. Stephen’s Cathedral. This building is made of stone. It has many towers, and the tallest one is almost 450 feet tall! St. Stephen’s Cathedral was built over 600 years ago. It is covered with very detailed stone carvings. St. Stephen’s Cathedral is an example of a building that is architecture and art together.

There are many palaces in Vienna.
