The Danube River is one of the main reasons that Vienna is the large city it is today. There are many other very large cities along the Danube River. I have been to two of these other cities. They are Bratislava in Slovakia and Budapest in Hungary.
The Danube River can create two different kinds of challenges. One of these challenges is when there is too much water in the river. This causes flooding. When a river floods it can be very dangerous. Sometimes floods can even destroy buildings.
The other challenge is when the river is too low. When a river does not have enough water the level of the river can get very low. This means that people can't transport things by boat. This also means that people can't use the river to water their plants. The Danube River gets low when it is very hot and there is not a lot of rain.
The Danube River is very beautiful, but it is not as important to people as it used to be. Now people can transport things by truck, train or plane. Now most of the boats on the Danube River near the cities are for tourists that want to travel and have fun, but boats are still used to transport some things between countries. The Danube River is still very important for the natural enviroment. People must work to save the Danube River from getting too dirty.
