Home Away from Home: A Week Immersed in Moroccan Culture

During my stay, I experienced the hammam with my host family. As a Muslim country, Morocco has gender separation in these spaces—men have their own section, and women have theirs. What struck me most was how connected and community-oriented the experience felt. Mothers brought their children, and families gathered to talk about daily life while relaxing and sharing the bathing experience. It was heartwarming to witness this sense of togetherness and collectivist community, one that I could relate to.

Additionally, there was something empowering about being in a room full of women of all ages and sharing this tradition. In a way, it reflected unity.

Despite the challenges of water scarcity, Moroccans continue to embody hospitality and a strong sense of community—one that thrives on connection and finds joy in sharing. Rather than serving as a setback, water scarcity has become a unifying force that fosters collective involvement and solidarity. My time in Morocco was truly invaluable. I was captivated by the beauty of the Arabic language, the richness of the food, and the warmth of the people. I came to realize that it’s not always about what you lack, but how you make the most of what you have(community) and the impact that has on those around you.
