Through my program abroad studying Global Health and Developmental Policy, I had the chance to visit Morocco. There, I learned about different aspects of health, culture, and community. Morocco, located in North-West Africa with a population of about 37.84 million people, is mostly Muslim and has beautiful landscapes by the coast. The culture is rich, with music, food, and natural products like argan oil and teas. Like many cultures around the world, people in Morocco are united by shared values and traditions, such as common foods like couscous and tagine, and the practice of Islam. During my one-week trip, I stayed with a host family, talked with my host siblings about their daily lives, and visited local parts of town. It was a rewarding experience to be part of such a warm and welcoming community. The Moroccan value of hospitality is clear, both in homes and markets, making me feel at home away from home as similar cultural values of collectivism and togetherness are present in my own community.
