The Korean word for magpie is 까치- "kkachi". It is celebrated as a bird of good fortune, sturdy spirit and as a provider of prosperity.
The magpie is a bird about the size of a pigeon (or a bit smaller). Magpies are mainly black with white on their stomachs and blue on their wings. Their face resembles one of a crow.
When I first saw the magpie, I was immediately in love with it. It's such a beautiful bird and different from the common birds I see in Florida. I think it's the strong blue color on the magpie that gives me such a feeling. When I first saw a magpie on my bus ride from the airport I thought, "I wonder if I'll see such a bird here ever again", and it turns out that they are one of the most common types of bird, here, in Korea.
The Oriental Magpie lives in countries such as China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan. It can also be found in parts of Russia.
