I have stayed local in Tampere this week, although walking five to six miles a day is the norm here sometimes as I travel around the surrounding suburbs and smaller towns.
I am about 6,000 miles from home right now, and I walk and travel quite a bit here!
Buses and walking are the two primary forms of transportation in Finland. Some people have cars and many people have bikes, but I do not have a driver's license here, and I am scared to ride a bike on the icy roads in the winter! The buses are warm, clean, efficient and on-time, plus they are driven by real experts and can drive in the winter blizzards with no problem.
One of the places that I visited was the Rauhaniemi public baths on a beautiful lake. First, I went into a "sauna" with my friends. A sauna is a very hot room that is kept full of steam that may help clear your skin of toxins or just help your body and mind to relax. Then, after the sauna, we went for a quick swim in the freezing lake - quite a contrast!
