Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

Portuguese is the only primary language. Many people think that it is the same as Spanish, but it is actually very different, especially the accent in the south of Brazil! The students at the University can choose from six languages to study and get a dual degree (English, German, French, Italian, Japanese or Spanish).

What type of money is used here?:

The Brazilian Real is the currency (denoted by R$). But you might be surprised to find out that it's pronounced with an "H" sound in the beginning! Portuguese speakers often pronounce "Rs" with "H" sounds - just one of the big differences between Spanish and Portuguese. The pronunciation of the currency tends to be very challenging for English speakers to pronounce.

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

Typically a bottle of water costs between R$1-3 (depending where you're buying it from). This translates to USD$0.2-0.6. Did you figure out that conversion rate?

What was the best meal this week?:

Brazilian pizza!! I was resistant at first because Brazilian pizza is so different from the pizza I am used to. Brazilians put onion, eggs, corn and lots of other things on their pizzas that we typically do not see in the US. In addition, they have sweet pizzas!
