Trying new food can be scary, but I’m really lucky because my host family is super understanding. They always offer me food and let me try it if I want to, but they don’t ever pressure me if I don’t want to. My absolute favorite foods that I’ve tried so far have been gnocchi, lasagna, colacao and empanadas. The first two are traditional Italian foods. Colacao is a chocolate powder mix for making delicious hot chocolate, which they drink a lot for breakfast. Every single restaurant has it, too. It’s delicious and a great, warm way to start a cool morning. Empanadas are the most Spanish food on my list. Empanadas can be just about anything wrapped in dough and then fried. It loosely translates to “in pan,” where pan means bread. My host mom makes empanadas with cheese and tomato. It looks kind of like pizza, and it tastes similar to pizza, but it’s Spanish. I love it! I was super excited when I tried this and found a traditional Spanish dish I could tell my mom about.
