La Feria de Sevilla: The Biggest Party of the Year!

Introduction:

The Feria in Sevilla is one of the two most important and famous traditions in the city--and it's certainly the most fun. It's a week-long festival that's all about celebrating Sevilla, dancing and honoring traditional customs. It's a really fun and colorful celebration of what makes Sevilla special.

What tradition did I learn about?:

There are two major traditions in Sevilla. They're both holidays that happen in the spring. Of these two, my favorite is called Feria. It translates to "fair," and it's exactly what it sounds like--but Spanish! Every spring, a huge, empty lot in a neighborhood in downtown Sevilla transforms into a small city. It even has its own street names just for this event. There are rows and rows of private tents called "casetas". These casetas are more like small houses, although some are actually bigger than houses. They're almost all privately owned by Spanish families, meaning the "socios" or owners of the caseta and the people they invite are the only people who can enter. Inside, there is tons of food, drinking, and of course dancing Sevillana! Sevilla has its own dance and music, both called Sevillana, which are like a version of Flamenca specific to the city. A lot of the tents will even have live music with their own private band, while some just play music over the speakers.
