Due to the unusually warm weather, there has not been enough snow in Tallinn to ski yet this season. Cross-country skiing, also known as Nordic Skiing, is an ancient form of transportation! It started over 5,000 years ago in Scandinavia. Scandinavia includes Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. They also used cross-country skiing in parts of Estonia. The word ski comes from an Old Norse word that meant “Stick of Wood”. In 1675, the Danish-Norwegian army reportedly used skies to cover long distances!
Today, cross-country skiing is still used for transportation. In remote places, people still use skis to get around during the winter! In the city, they normally remove the snow off of the roads and sidewalks so you would not be able to ski. When there is enough snow, many people go to nearby parks to have some fun! I hope that I will be able to try skiing before I leave!
