Let's Talk About Date Palms

Introduction:

I never thought about eating dates when I was back home in the United States. But since I moved to Morocco, all I can think about is how good dates are! Dates are not just sweet snacks. They also have cultural meaning for the people of Morocco.

What does this creature or plant look like?:

Dates are a fruit of the palm tree. The trees have straight trunks with shaggy bark on them. Many long palm leaves fan out from branches at the top of the tree. The dates grow in bunches at the top of the tree too.

The dates are dried and then sold. When the date is dried, it is 75% sugar, kind of like a natural candy. Dried dates look a little wrinkly on the outside. On the inside, there's a goopy sweetness and a big seed.

How did I feel when I saw it?:

When I first saw the date palm tree, I was very confused because I thought that palm trees only grew coconuts! But then I learned that it was not true! I was very excited to learn more about the date palms.

Where does it live?:

Date palms are native to dry, desert areas such as Morocco and other parts in the Middle East and North Africa. These countries grow most of the date palms in the world.
