International Mother Language Day Celebration at Indiana University Bloomington

Why does the community have this tradition?:

The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University Bloomington celebrates this day to recognize the importance of multilingualism and multiculturalism in an increasingly transnational world. This thought is very much in sync with the Fulbright Fellowship that I am a part of which recognizes the need to foster multicultural relationships to promote love and brotherhood among the people of the world. We are global citizens in the true sense of the term and emerging traditions like this not only bring us closer but also enable an understanding of the rich history and cultural heritage of linguistic communities from around the world.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

This tradition is related to the larger linguistic and cultural environment which I as an international Fulbright Scholar am a part of. This cultural program helped me and many other people like me to connect with the world at a global level by providing opportunities to share, collaborate, celebrate and take pride in our culture and language. I am forever indebted to the Fulbright Commission and Dhar India Studies Program at Indiana University Bloomington for providing me this opportunity which I will cherish for the rest of my life.
