The Ease of Public Transit in Morocco

How do people get around?:

There are multiple ways to get around depending upon where you'd like to go. I would first like to mention the exchange rate here, which is currently 1USD to 9.5MAD.

1) Petite (small) Taxis: these are used to get around within a city. Cities even have their own colored taxis and the same models (Dacia). For example: Rabat has blue taxis, Marrakech has yellow, Meknes has red... and all operate on a meter. However, if you are a tourist (or look like a tourist), they will try to say it doesn't work and overcharge you a flat rate. After they realize that I know Arabic and live here, they just drive off because not using the meter is against the law. There are set tariffs that are listed on the window, such as to the airport.

2) Taxi Kabir (big): These taxis are used when going in between towns and cities. One such taxi can fit six people (plus the driver) and each person has the same set price. The taxis are often the bodies of Mercedes-Benz's from the late 1980s and early 1990s. Lately, there have been new, more comfortable, vans coming onto the streets. Don't get me wrong, everyone loves a squished taxi ride for 30 minutes to two hours with no AC in summer; however, new vehicles are always appreciated. [5MAD - 30MAD]

3) City Bus/Passenger Vans: The city bus system is very well connected. My experience was in Marrakech while in Peace Corps. I had a city bus whose route to Tameslouht and back to Marrakech. It cost me 5MAD one-way. The buses came once every 30 minutes. In between, there were also small vans, or naqul, that can hold about twelve to eighteen people for the same price.
