The school that I work at is about two miles away from my apartment. By bus, my commute only takes 20 minutes!
The farthest I traveled this week was 15 miles, from downtown Las Palmas to Roque Nublo, which is a hike in the center of the island.
Since I began my journey in September, the farthest I have traveled has been from Las Palmas to Madeira, Portugal, which is a small island located about 350 miles north of Gran Canaria. My friends and I flew there to run our first half-marathon together!
I get around the city using the Guagua, which is what the locals call the bus here in the Canary Islands! The bus system is well-connected and reliable, but I’m always amazed at how skillfully the drivers navigate the narrow mountain roads.
One afternoon, I went for a walk around Vegueta, the oldest part of the city. I loved wandering through the cobblestone streets and admiring the beautiful 15th-century architecture. It seemed like every corner had a different instrument playing, filling the air with jazz and Spanish music. I even came across an old man playing the harp!
