I have gotten to know Marie (pronounced "Maria") through day trips and events she has planned. Some of my favorites have been an enameling workshop, where we decorated traditional Czech mugs, and a day trip to the town of Kutna Hora. It has been such a treat to get to know her better and learn about her life story. I hope you enjoy learning about her life, too!
My full name is Marie Straková.
I live in Kolín, Czech Republic, a pretty average Czech town with about 33,000 residents. It’s 60 kilometers from Prague (where I work), so it’s easy to commute there by train (in approximately 40 minutes). I still live with my dad and my brother because rental prices in Prague are more than half a paycheck. Since our house is big enough and everyone’s work schedules are so different, I can go days without seeing them.
Our house is about 100 years old--very old and cold. It has two floors, plus a room in the attic (my room). We also have a backyard and a big patio, where we spend most of the warmer days.
