The local langauge of my village is Ewe. Ewe is also the ethnicity of most of the people in my village; hence, why the language is called Ewe. When I am at school I speak only French or English with the students. The country is francophone so all formal instruction is done in fFrench, unless it is an English class with me. Otherwise I have neighbors who speak Kabiye, Mina, Bassar and Pule. Togo has over 50 local languages.
In Togo, people use a type of money called the West African CFA franc. Sometimes it is written as CFA or XOF, but both names mean the same kind of money. This money was introduced by the French a long time ago during colonization, and it is still used today. On the coins, you can see a sawfish, which is a symbol of prosperity in many African cultures. The paper bills show pictures of things found in Africa, such as antelopes, banana trees, grouper fish and colorful birds. The money also looks different from money in the United States. Instead of being mostly green, the bills can be purple, blue, green, orange and red. The bills are also different sizes, which makes them easier to recognize and feel.
