Vineyards

How does it use its environment to survive?:

Grape vines use their entire environment to survive. Like all plants, they need sunlight and water and nutrients from the soil to survive. Grape vines in vineyards are not wild, as in they are taken care of by people. So these grape vines also need people to monitor them to survive.

What can harm this creature or plant? Are we worried about it?:

Grape vines can be harmed by insects, bacteria, fungi, mold, rot and diseases related to those organisms. However, an even more serious issue for grape vines is climate change. Climate plays a large role in the growth of the plants. With climate change comes ever-warmer temperatures, and as we saw above, grape vines prefer more moderate temperatures.

In warmer temperatures, fewer grapes will be produced. Because climate change is also unpredictable, there is also the threat of colder winters which means more frost. Frost will also mean less grapes are produced. In both cases of extreme temperatures, the grapes produced will be of lesser quality.

I believe grape growers are used to dealing with insects and other diseases that are dangerous to grape vines. However, we cannot predict precisely the effects of climate change, and thus, we do not know exactly how to adapt or prepare for this certain weather shift. So we are worried about climate change and its' effect on grape vines, as well as on other plants, animals and people around the world.
