I really like to walk them to school and pick them up again when school is over. My family lives with my wife's mother, and my own mother lives fairly close by. I have a brother-in-law who also works on ships, and it was through him that I learned about this career path.
When I am in Cape Town, I drive my mom's car. One of my daughters is close to getting her driver's license, so when she does, I think I will have to get a car for our family so she can drive everyone around. The kids' school is a five-minute walk away, so we either drive or walk where we want to go. Most of my year, though, I am traveling aboard the S.A. Agulhas II, which is an exciting way to get around--especially when we are traveling through the ice around Antarctica.
I really like Jordan sneakers, and I like to wear Nike clothes. I also have this black sweatshirt [points to what he is wearing] that has patches from all the expeditions I've been a part of over my years on the S.A. Agulhas II. When I first started on the ship, the Chief Steward had a similar sweatshirt, and I asked him if I could have it. He said, "No, you have to feel it... you can't just get it." I know what he meant now. I have felt all of these expeditions. I have visited each of these islands, research bases and remote areas, and this sweatshirt is where I keep all those experiences in one place.
