Our News

What main languages are spoken here?:

Spanish, or Castillano as they call it here, is the primary language used in shops, schools and restuarants. However, about 45% of the time, you can hear people speaking Galician; the traditional language of Galicia. It is a mix of Portuguese and Spanish, since we are the closest autonomous region (kind of like a state in the US) to Portugal. It was an endangered language for a long time as the Spanish government used to ban it from being spoken. However, the local government, or Xunta, has made a concerted effort to protect the language and teach it in schools. While kids don't often use it, adults and elderly folks speak it whenever they can!

What type of money is used here?:

We use the euro, since we are a part of the European Unino (EU). This makes travelling to other EU countries (Germany, France, Portugal, etc.) super convenient because you don't have to worry about any currency exchange!

How much does a bottle of water cost?:

On average a bottle of water costs 0.80€, or about $0.83.

What was the best meal this week?:

This week, the best meal I had was chipirones a la plancha, or steamed squid! They were served with a remoulade sauce, similar to a cocktail sauce, that was delicious.
