Celebrating Botswana's Freedom

In the morning on Boipuso, people have parades and cheerfully wave the Botswana flag which is colored blue, white and black. Many families get together to have picnics in the afternoon and watch fireworks in the evening. Common foods served at Boipuso picnics include seswaa which is pounded meat made from goat or beef and pap which is a mashed-up, corn-like meal. There are also fairs, art shows, concerts, sports games and ceremonies.

Is this tradition connected to its environment? How?:

Boipuso is very connected to the environment of Botswana. This is mainly because national symbols are used to celebrate Botswana Independence Day and the national symbols are inspired by things in the environment. For example, the blue stripe in the nation’s flag is supposed to represent rainwater which is very valuable in Botswana’s dry, desert-like environment. Rainwater is also important culturally because it represents hope and confidence in Botswana’s future.
