Botswana's Blessed Beef!

Introduction:

Before arriving in Botswana, I was a vegetarian, but I decided to put my plant-based diet on hold during my time abroad. I had a harder time finding enough plant-based options to satisfy my large appetite. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste and quality of Botswana's beef. It was by far the best quality meat that I had ever tasted in my life. Botswana has a thriving cattle industry, so it makes sense that beef is a staple in the country's cuisine. Seswaa (pronounced seh-swah) is a beef dish that has turned out to be one of my favorites.

What food did I try?:

I tried seswaa which is a traditional meat dish of Botswana made of beef. As the national dish of Botswana, people often eat seswaa at weddings, funerals and culturally important holidays.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

I was delighted to have seswaa for the first time. I was aware that it is a culturally significant dish and I felt like I became more connected to the culture when I ate it. The meat is salty and tender, and the texture is soft to the point where it is easy to chew. Before trying seswaa, I had never had beef in that form before.

How is the food prepared?:

The meat is seasoned with salt and bay leaves and boiled in water for about four to five hours.
