Experiencing a different way of life made me want to keep traveling so that I could continue to learn from people I meet around the world.
New York University had always been my dream school for college. It is located in New York City! Coming from a small town, I always wanted to experience what it would be like to live in the city. The other reason why I love NYU is that this university sends more of its college students abroad than any other. With so many locations, the students have a lot of options for studying abroad. I chose NYU Paris because I have been learning the French language since I was in sixth grade, just like you! Learning another language can be challenging, but that is why I enjoy it!
At NYU, I am in a program called Global Liberal Studies. The “global” part is why I am studying abroad for a year in Paris! This program wants students to travel and learn about other cultures. Meeting new people from all over the world allows us to open our eyes to new experiences.
My concentration in Global Liberal Studies is called Contemporary Culture and Creative Production. What do all those words mean? Well, this means I focus my studying on how we read and analyze cultures, and then I reflect on what I learn through a creative mindset. For example, in Paris last semester, I interviewed aspiring writers about why they came to Paris. Then I could report my results through a creative medium such as writing, making a video, or using photography.
My grandma who is from Quebec, Canada grew up speaking English and French. When she moved to America with my grandpa, they never taught their four daughters French. Although my mom learned a few French phrases from my grandmother, she never became bilingual.
