A Taste of Taiwan!

It is baked in a big ceramic pit and filled with pork and kimchi (a spicy Korean food made by fermenting vegetables). There are tons of different kinds of dumplings you can find at Taiwanese night markets like shao mai (pan-fried dumplings) and my family's favorite: xiao long bao (soup dumplings).

My favorite dessert at the night markets is Peanut Roll Ice Cream! It is made by putting shaved peanut brittle, ice cream, and (sometimes) cilantro wrapped in a thin pancake. It's like a dessert burrito! It is so tasty because it is the perfect mix of sweet and savory.

How did I feel when I tried it?:

Since night markets always have lots of people and I have to speak new words in Chinese, sometimes I am nervous to go to a new night market for dinner. After getting over the initial nerves at a new place speaking a language I am still learning, I am always very satisfied with my dinner! I always get very excited to find new delicious foods to add to my list of favorite foods in Taiwan. The first time I tried a bao at a night market, I was super hungry from a very busy day so I was beyond relieved when it was one of the most amazing things I had ever eaten. I have brought many friends and even my family to try my favorite bao stall at the Shilin Night Market and they all agree that they taste amazing (although they are very messy to eat). I hope to visit as many night markets as possible in Taiwan so I can keep being brave and trying new things!

How is the food prepared?:

Some night market foods are prepared before the market opens. Vendors keep the food in carts or small stalls. Most vendors only sell a few different things.
