Transportation in the Netherlands

Introduction:

There are so many ways to get from point ‘a’ to point ‘b’ in Amsterdam. The complex system of public transportation makes everything accessible. I feel like the world is at my fingertips! Certain modes of transportation, such as the sprinter (train), travel far distances in the Netherlands. As a result, I can hop on a train and go three hours up north to Groningen or head three hours down south to Maastricht. Those are the most northern and most southern tips of the Netherlands and both are on my bucket list! I still have not traveled farther than Giethoorn, however this past Saturday, I traveled by Metro, train and bus to get to National Park Hoge Veluwe. The trip was about two hours long towards the center of the country. Next weekend, I am taking a plane to Berlin, Germany and returning on a six hour train ride.

How do people get around?:

Options include: bike, bus, train, tram, metro and boat. The public transportation system is very reliable and will only shut down in very serious weather conditions. However, if you’re Dutch, that’s no problem! Many Dutch people are willing to ride their bikes in strong wind and rain. Many own rain pants/ suits that keep their clothes dry underneath. Some people also own cars. However, it is very difficult to navigate by car in Amsterdam because of the small roads and all the bikes.
