Kangaroos are one of the national symbols of Australia. Because of this, people living in Australia feel a deep need to take care of this special animal. I took a tour of The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs. Chris 'Brolga' Barns, also known as Kangaroo Dundee on television, guided us on the tour and taught me all about the ways that I could help to save orphaned baby roos.
Brolga taught me about the importance of looking out for abandoned baby kangaroos. There are a few ways that a kangaroo baby can be left alone, but if you are prepared you can help rescue the animal! If you find a joey (this is what a baby kangaroo is called) all alone, your best tool to help will be a pillowcase. Brolga taught us that pillowcases are great at recreating the sensation of the kangaroo mother's pouch. After putting the little joey into the pillowcase, you should cuddle it so that it can feel your warmth and heartbeat. Joeys are used to these things because of all the time they spend in their mother's pouch. Next, drive to the nearest town and ask who takes care of orphaned kangaroos. Brolga let us know that every town has its own dedicated kangaroo mothers!
