The Outback

It helps to keep the area a little bit cooler since it can be very hot. This wind can also be used to make power by using wind turbines. Wind turbines are sort of like fancy windmills. They both work to change the wind's energy into electricity. Pretty cool, right?

What challenges do people face living in this environment?:

The challenges of living in the Outback are the extreme temperatures, long periods with little rain and relative isolation. Isolation is when you're very far from another place. A lot of people think that the Outback has a real danger of snakes and spiders, but the sun is actually much more dangerous! Heat exhaustion, sunstroke and dehydration are big risks in the area so it's important to drink lots and lots of water.

How have people been adapting to this environment?:

People have adapted to the Outback by working hard to understand the environment that they're living in. In areas that can be very windy, they install wind turbines. In spots where flooding can occur, there are floodways on the roads that allow people to continue driving. There are also plenty of rest stops and bathrooms to use while you drive through the Outback since you may be driving for hours before you reach a town.
