Greece: The Food Heaven of the Mediterranean!

Γεμιστά (Yemista) is a dish that consists of seasoned rice stuffed into either peppers, tomatoes and/or zucchini. In fact the Greek word yemista literally means “to be stuffed with”. Traditionally, this meal is vegetarian, but it can be made with meat if you just cook the rice with a meat of your choosing!

Margherita pizza here is not what the dish you think of when ordering one back in the United States. Typically when you order one in the United States, you would have a pizza that is baked with circular mozzarella cheese blocks and sliced baby tomatoes on top of a bed of marina sauce and dough that is then sprinkled with basil. At most places here in Greece, a “margherita pizza” is just plain cheese pizza, but, nevertheless, it is still a solid choice when splitting a meal with friends!

Μωσαϊκό (Mosaiko) is a cold Greek dessert that is made with semi-sweet chocolate and tea biscuits. At first glance, one would think that this dish would have more of a crunchy texture, but as soon as you dig your fork into it and taste it, you can see that it is a soft cake that is smooth yet rich with chocolate.

Γύρο (Gyro) is by the far the quintessential street food in Greece. There are many places that specialize in this dish and are open until very late in the night to serve hungry customers that may just want a late night snack. But this is not a “snack.” Gyros are in fact very filling! They consist of meat layered with tzatziki, lettuce, onions, tomatoes and fries that are then wrapped up in pita. They really are a staple item on any menu.
