In fact for the yemista, the owner of the restaurant my roommate’s mom took us to actually went home to his own kitchen to bring this dish. Beyond the appreciation I feel for these encounters, I am even more grateful to have experienced the immense pride the Greek locals here feel for their culture. They are so giving and beyond welcoming. Within the first week of being here, my friends and I already had some regular spots!
Additionally, one thing I have picked up about dining here in Greece is how much everyone shares food. Even when I go out with other students in my program, we all share each other's food, allowing everyone to get a taste of everything. This is something I was told by someone when I first arrived, and it is a custom that I really enjoy because trying new foods can be intimidating at times. Especially, when you are in a new place with completely new food and, most times, menus that aren’t necessarily in English or a language you can read or understand, it can be hard deciding what to eat. But the locals here have really been so warm and welcoming that you forget any fears that you may have had and just enjoy yourself!
