Look Παιδιά (Kids), It's a Kid's Life!

What language do you speak at school? How do you say "Hello" in your language?:

At school I mostly speak Greek, but I also have English lessons there twice each week, and I have private English lessons after school, too, like many of my classmates. "Hello" in Greek is "γεια." Can you say "yah"?

*An aside from Kirsten: formally, "hello" is "γεια σας," but this greeting is often shortened to simply "γεια." It sounds like a "y" followed by a short version of the "ah" sound you'd make when sticking your tongue out at a doctor's office. Now you try!

What are some common kids' names at your school?:

The most common names are Andreas and Giorgos for boys and Maria and Eleni for girls.

*An aside from Kirsten: These are the most common names for people in all age groups in Cyprus. My colleague Anastasia told me that most children (but not her daughter!) take their grandparent's name, which is why almost every household in Cyprus has at least one member with the name Andreas or Giorgos (like the English name "George," but pronounced "yOUr-gos") and another with the name Maria (like "Mary," after Jesus Christs's mother) or Eleni (like "Helen"). She told me there's a funny traditional saying that a house in Cyprus isn't a house at all if it doesn't have family members with those names!

What subjects do you study in school, and which one is your favorite?:

In school we study Greek, English, physical education, music, art, science, design and technology, math, religion, history and geography. Math and music are my favorites!

What is your homework like?:

Usually I have homework in math, Greek, and English.
