Because of this, during the holiday, people will decorate their houses with red ornaments and people would set off firecrackers and fireworks to protect themselves from the “Year.”
In the past, before ringing in the New Year, people would light fireworks--much like Americans do on the Fourth of July. However, because of the air pollution in China, lighting fireworks has become illegal as it would make the air even more polluted. So in order to protect the health of its citizens, the Chinese government has outlawed the use of fireworks. Though the loss of this tradition is a pity, I can understand why this law was put into place. Hopefully, someday in the future, China will be able to reinstate this tradition.
