An Interview with Middle Schoolers

Introduction:

I was very lucky to sit down with six middle school students--Fetrus, Vigo, Ivander, Sherine, Sandy and Evan--and ask them about their daily lives here in Pontianak.

Listening to the students talk, I realized that many things are very similar to the lives of kids in America. In Indonesia, students like to play with their friends after school, play music, draw and go to the mall. But some things are very different and may be shocking to you! For example, almost every student rides on the back of their parent's motorcycle to school every day. Also, a typical breakfast includes fried chicken and rice--usually around 5:30 a.m. or earlier!

What do you eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner?:

For breakfast, we have noodles, fried chicken, fried eggs with rice or fried rice. Sandy prefers apples and fruit with plain yogurt!

For lunch, we have rice or noodles, chicken, vegetables and tempeh.*

For dinner, we have the same: rice or noodles, fried chicken, vegetables, eggs and tempeh.

*(Tempeh is a food made from soybeans.)

What is your house like?:

My house is pretty nice. The whole family--my parents and brothers and sisters--lives there.

I live with my four brothers and sisters and my parents, so I share a room with my older brother.

I have my own room in my house.
