Getting Around in Indonesia

Introduction:

In Indonesia, many different types of vehicles are used. A vehicle is a thing for getting from one place to another. In this country, people use cars, buses, motorcycles, trains, planes and boats as transportation. However, some types of transportation are more common than others. For example, everyone here knows how to drive a motorcycle, but not everyone knows how to drive a car; there are more motorcycles than cars on the road here.

How do people get around?:

Most people use a motorcycle. Sometimes you will see up to three people on a motorcycle! People also use cars, but motorcycles are more common.

If you have to go very far on land, it is very typical, or common, to go on a bus but not on a train. Here, any trip that takes longer than 30 minutes is considered a long trip.

In some parts of Indonesia, there are many small islands. The only way to get to the villages and small communities on these islands is to take a boat. A common boat is a speedboat, but in most places, you can also take a longboat, which is a big, wooden boat.

How did I feel when I tried this way of getting around?:

At first, I was very nervous about riding on the back of a motorcycle! In America, not many people drive motorcycles, and we usually think that driving motorcycles looks fun but can be dangerous.
