However, in Indonesia, it's very normal to ride on motorcycles.
There is a phone app here called "Gojek." Gojek is like Uber, but instead of ordering a car to take you somewhere, you order a motorcycle! The motorcycle comes to your location, you get on the back seat of the motorcycle and the driver takes you where you want to go. One Gojek ride costs 10,000 rupiah, or about 60 cents.
Now, I am very comfortable using Gojek to go to my school, restaurants and the mall. It's quite efficient, which means that it's fast and easy to use.
There are two reasons motorcycles are so popular. Both reasons are because of the environment.
First, in Indonesia it is very hot all year. The saying, "if it's more than 100 meters, take your motorcycle," is just a joke that Indonesians say, but it has some truth in it. Walking long distances in the sun and heat can be dangerous. It is so hot here that many people faint when they are in the heat for too long. Other problems, like heatstroke (when you get sick from heat) and dehydration (when you get sick because you don't drink enough water), can also be caused by being in the extreme heat for too long. If people want to walk or run outside for exercise, they have to go early in the morning before the sun rises.
Second, Indonesia has large areas of rainforest. The big cities have good infrastructure, or roads and buildings, but the rest of Indonesia has smaller villages and jungle. In some parts of Indonesia, the roads are not very good. Plus, natural disasters, like rainstorms, floods, earthquakes and mudslides, can damage roads frequently.
