In South Korea, most people speak Korean. Surprisingly, not many people speak English here, so knowing at least the Korean alphabet, called Hangul, is really helpful if you want to get around or order food. That is a great opportunity for me to practice my Korean language skills and immerse myself in the culture even more!
In South Korea, they use the Korean Won. There are four main bills: 1,000 won, 5,000 won, 10,000 won, and 50,000 won. They also use coins, but you mostly see the 10, 100, and 500 won coins.
A bottle of water costs about 1,100 won, which is around 85 cents in US dollars. It’s affordable and convenient to grab from any store or vending machine when I’m out exploring!
The best meal I had this week was Korean Fried Chicken and Yeopki Tteokbokki. Tteokbokki is a dish with chewy rice cakes, fish cakes, and sometimes seafood, all cooked in a spicy sauce. We had it as a picnic meal, and it was so tasty and refreshing! My Korean friend told me that it’s a favorite for students, especially for delivery. It was fun to try such a popular local dish!
