Learn more about the traditions at the Jogyesa Temple located in the Heart of Seoul: Lotus Lantern Making!

Introduction:

During my stay in Seoul, I had the chance to visit one of the most popular temples in the city—Jogyesa Temple. Seoul is a fascinating place filled with tall, modern buildings as well as historical sites like palaces and temples. Jogyesa Temple is in the Jonggak area, known for its big buildings, shopping malls, and delicious restaurants. I was amazed by the way modern city life blended with traditional culture in this area. As I explored the temple, I felt like I was stepping into a different, quieter side of the city. Jogyesa Temple has a history that makes it even more special. It was originally built in the 14th century but suffered a fire and was later rebuilt about 110 years ago. This mix of old and new, both in the temple’s architecture and the surrounding area, makes it a must-visit spot for anyone who wants to experience the heart of the capital.

What tradition did I learn about?:

During my visit to the Jogyesa Temple, I had the opportunity to look around and visit with with a monk who explained to me the beautiful tradition of Lantern Making. This is a tradition where visitors and community members gather at the temple to craft lotus-shaped lanterns using colorful paper.
